This is a pretty basic question. And it’s worth asking. Why should we take the time to seriously, thoughtfully, study the Bible?
Here’s a couple responses from the Author:
When Moses had finished reciting all these words to all Israel he said to them, “Keep in mind all the words I am solemnly proclaiming to you today; you must command your children to observe carefully all the words of the law. For this is no idle word for you – it is your life! Duet 32:45-47a
But now I am coming to you, and I am saying these things in the world, so they may experience my joy completed in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them, because they do not belong in the world, just as I do not belong in the world. I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but that you keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong in the world just as I do not belong in the world. Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth. John 17:13-17 – Jesus’ prayer.
Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. 2 Tim 3:16
How would you answer this for yourself?
The trend in the evangelical church of late seems to place less emphasis on our relationship with Christ and more on our relationship with our fellow man. There is an urgency to exhort people to serve, even to the point that some churches have apparently (if you use the understanding of new members as a guide) defined themselves much more in terms of what they “do” rather than what they “believe.” And if faith without works is dead, then you can hardly blame them for deploring apathy where they find it.
I did a search of every imperative verb in the new testament, just wanting to pray over all the things that God has affirmatively commanded us to do, and ended up with about 120 items. There are many things about serving or loving others. There were many, many more commands that are internal. WE need to be transformed.
What is a “good deed” done by an untransformed person? There are a lot of committed non Christians in the world who, year after year, spend the better part of their life doing everything they can to help others, without any apparent personal gain available.
How can the church expect works to bring people to Christ when the lost do the same sort of works? How can the church expect a call to morality to bring people to Christ when the morality inside the church is so close to the morality outside the church?
The Bible says we need to have our minds transformed to think more like God thinks and less like the world thinks. We need to know truth and truth comes through the Word. God’s Word is either authoritative or it’s not. As the apostle Paul said ( and I paraphrase ) if Christ isn’t who he said he is, if scripture isn’t trustworthy, then the Christians are the biggest fools of all.
